STEP-UP (Short-Term Education Program for Underrepresented Persons)

Opportunity for Undergraduate Students

The program is called STEP-UP (Short-Term Education Program for Underrepresented Persons) and the co-PIs are Mona Fouad and Tim Garvey ( at UAB. STEP-UP is a program funded by NIDDK and the Office of Minority Health Research Coordination intended to expose underrepresented minority and disadvantaged students to mentored biomedical research, and hopefully engender a desire for a future career in science or medicine. This is an excellent opportunity for undergraduate students to participate in obesity and diabetes research.

Selected student applicants choose their research site and participate in the identification of a willing mentor.  Students from Columbia University or any institution across the country can apply online and are linked with experienced research mentors at the institution they choose for the summer experience.  The NORC members listed on your website represent a great source of potential mentors for undergraduates at your institution or from other schools who want to study at your institution.  Student benefits are listed below and a nominal payment is provided to the mentor for supplies to support their student’s research project.
